In 1975, a band of scrappy climbers in Umeå, Sweden began tinkering, building, and modifying gear to suit the demands of their adventures. They called their DIY club Klättermusen Verkstad, which roughly translates to “the climbing mouse workshop.” Over the next decade, what started as a hands-on gathering of climbers and makers gradually grew into what Klättermusen is today: a full-fledged outdoor company making expedition-grade gear and supporting adventures around the world while still holding onto its early instinct to experiment, rework, and make things by hand.
In October 2025, Klättermusen paid homage to those roots by opening a new conceptual space in Stockholm. Part workshop, part laboratory, part clubhouse, it’s a place for creatives of all kinds to make and meet. And fittingly, it carries the name of the original club: Verkstad.
“If we want to do something, we try it and see what works and what doesn’t,” Albert Jansson, one of two characteristically blonde Swedes leading the project, told me recently. Jansson comes from a background in fashion retail, film, and PR. The yin to his yang is Anders Johansson, who left his job as a PE teacher to merge his interests in music, design, coffee, and clothes at Klättermusen.
“We’re spoiled in a way that we have this space we can use quite freely,” Johansson adds.
