Need a dose of inspiration and isolation? At these remote retreats, makers can hone their craft and be immersed in wild, natural beauty

In a saturated vacation rental market, we've got our pick of beautifully designed cabins to occupy short-term on trips and vacations. So these days, we're often looking for an extra element in addition to a nice place to stay—an on-site sauna or a river setting, for instance. Recently, a chance discovery of an artist-in-residence program at the Bothy Project’s rustic and remote cabin in the Scottish Hebrides made me realize that some of the most unique and appealing properties are also havens for artists. Inspired, I set out to find even more creative hideouts around the world that combined a remote retreat with a similar creative mission.

As it turns out, spectacular properties on nearly every continent exist to provide makers with a unique opportunity to dive deep into their creative wells while embedded in the land and local culture. One part escape hatch from the doldrums of daily life, one part creative hub for solitary or community retreats, each location is a dynamic combination intentionally rooted in rugged, remote regions for true artistic immersion. From Southern India to Cape Cod to Tasmania and beyond, these one-of-a-kind cabins are open to artists everywhere.

Dune Shacks of the Peaked Hill Bars Historic District — Cape Cod, USA

  • Fee: $400-$500/week
  • Length of Stay: 1-3 Weeks
  • Dates Available: Year-round
  • Discipline: Writers and visual arts
  • Notes: Cabins do not have water or electricity

Most closely associated with the twentieth-century poet and novelist Harry Kemp, who was known as “Poet of the Dunes,” the sunbaked peninsula of Cape Cod has been a source of inspiration to creatives for decades. Today, three out of the 19 primitive dune shacks located on the Peaked Hill Bars coastline between Provincetown and Truro, including the iconic Fowler Dune Shack and C-Scape Dune Shack, are dedicated to hosting visual artists and writers throughout the year. A residence here offers a chance to siphon some of that same creative energy that luminaries like Kemp, Walt Whitman, Ezra Pound, and others harnessed while residing on these sandy shores.

Bothy Project, Sweeney's Bothy — Isle of Eigg, Scotland

  • Fee: Fully funded
  • Length of Stay: 1-2 weeks
  • Dates Available: Year-round
  • Discipline: All mediums, plus researchers and local community members

Perched atop a rural hillside on the Isle of Eigg in the Scottish Hebrides, a tiny off-grid cabin with a single sloped roof and glass facade lets in panoramic views of the wild North Atlantic. The cabin is called Sweeney’s Bothy (bothies are rustic shelters scattered across remote areas in the United Kingdom). It was built by the Bothy Project, a local charity “providing artist residencies in bespoke small-scale, off-grid spaces to explore creativity, landscape, and living simply.” Local culture dictates a strong spirit of sustainability, and the community-run island parlays the art and research done at Sweeney’s Bothy into talks, podcasts, and more, all meant to inspire meaningful environmental and societal change. Residencies at Sweeney’s Bothy are in high demand, and there may be a waitlist.

Tasman Cottage — Southeast Tasman Peninsula, Australia

  • Fee: $550 + $80 cleaning fee for entire stay
  • Length of Stay: 5 days
  • Dates Available: May 1 - November 1
  • Discipline: All mediums

Each year, 24 artists are invited to the Tasman Cottage for a heavily discounted stay in a renovated cabin set in southeast Australia’s wild and raw landscape. The cottage was formerly part of the historic Penzance Motel, rumored to be Australia’s first motel after opening in 1939. The property overlooks the gin-clear waters of Pirate’s Bay—a remote stretch of white sandy beaches and surf breaks in rural Tasmania. Sadly, the motel is gone, but the cabin still stands, having been restored using locally sourced timber and stone while original cedar windows, panelling, and floorboards remain to tie its storied past to the present. Here, makers can immerse themselves in splendid isolation on the coast using the cottage’s study space, library, and a connection to the local environment to develop their artistic projects. The hosts of this getaway in the scenic Araucanía region of the southern Andes in Chile invite artists, big thinkers, and scientific researchers to their remote cabin to animate their mission of “envisioning alternative perspectives on our relationship with the natural world.” How exactly it comes to fruition is up to the maker to decide during a four-week-long self-directed residency, but there’s little doubt that the volcano-studded landscape of the Cañon del Blanco Valley will be a wellspring of inspiration. The rustic mountain lodge has five shared rooms with private study and work areas, communal kitchen, and a large traditional Chilean fireplace—called a fogón—that has an open hearth used for cooking meals, sharing stories, and bringing people together.
