When people picture backpacking gear, they often picture the big names: Osprey, REI, Nemo, Big Agnes. But ask anyone who has hiked a long trail what they carried, and you'll hear a different set of names: Zpacks. Durston. Katabatic. Gossamer Gear. These are the ultralight backpacking brands that long-distance hikers turn to when they realize they'd trade bells, whistles, and comfort for a few less ounces on the back. And thanks to its deep, dedicated community, ultralight backpacking philosophies are more widely recognized than ever, and so are the ultralight brands making the gear.
Most of these brands were started in garages, basements, or spare bedrooms; they're not sold in big retail stores; and they're run by thru-hikers who got tired of carrying gear that didn't work the way they needed it to. Over decades for some and just a few years for others, some of those side projects have grown into full-time companies with waitlists and cult followings. Others are still a single person at a sewing machine filling custom orders one at a time.
What ties them together is a shared obsession with weight and a refusal to add a single gram that isn't earning its keep. Though there’s an undeniable bit of clout involved in having a low base weight, at its core the ultralight pursuit is about feeling comfortable exploring more terrain. More time on trail, less time bogged down with little luxury items at camp.
I've hiked more than 7,000 miles on long trails throughout North America, testing everything from ultralight tents and sleeping bags to hiking sandals. In the hiking space—as any Garage Grown Gear devotee knows well—there are Mmore cottage brands making ultralight outdoor gear than we could ever keep track of. And many deserve a spotlight of their own. For the sake of this list, we stuck with well-established brands myself and the Field Mag team have personal experience with and vouch for.
So, if you're interested in losing a few ounces on your next hiking trip, these 16 best ultralight backpacking brands are worth knowing.
