Given their focus on the Earth’s history, geologists don’t usually get credit for cutting edge product collaborations. But a mutual love of the natural surfaces around us is the heart of the new Bedrock Sandals x Pa’lante Packs collaboration collection.

Available from 5 August 2025, this collaboration, which includes a side bag and a two pairs of sandals, stays true to each brands’ minimalist ethos as well as their founders' respective backgrounds in the science of rock. Which goes as follows...

Dan Opalacz and Nick Pence started Bedrock in 2011 during the barefoot Born to Run huarache craze. After quickly capturing the hearts of the thru-hiking, rafting, and bikepacking communities with the durability and performance of their sandals, the pair started selling shoes more widely via national and international retailers like REI and Outsiders store. The Bedrock Cairn sandals are consistently voted the best hiking sandals by testers (including us) which has earned the company its place in the cannon of storied sandal makers like Chaco and Teva.

Speaking of names, I’ve always taken the name “Bedrock” at face value—it’s the solid surface beneath our feet, after all—but at the brand’s core are two founders with geology degrees who think the Earth is pretty gneiss.

As it happens, Pa’lante Packs founder Andrew Bentz also studied geology. His company released its first ultralight hiking backpack in 2017 and immediately became a cult product for ultralight thru-hikers. Pa’lante also struck a chord with those who appreciate style and the offbeat branding that corporations rarely deliver.

Given the shared audience of both brands, Opalacz says the Bedrock x Pa'lante collaboration is less about reaching new customers than creating something fun. Bedrock leaned on Pa’lante during the design process, giving Bentz reign to go a bit wild on new colors for its existing products. Typically, Cairn sandals use gray or black soles and add pops of color in the straps, but Vibram was open to making a more vibrant outsole for this project. And boy did they.

The result is a version of both the Cairn Evo PRO and Cairn Evo 3D PRO sandals with an alluring, mauve sole. It’s sleek, yet unexpected—like Louboutins for the hip, outdoorsy type. The color looks amazing on the collab edition of the Palante Side-Bag too. Even the standard Bedrock tag got a sneaky update with Pa’lante’s “Of quartz I love hiking” design on the inside.

While an interest in hiking and geology is great, Opalacz thinks the Pro sandal and sidebag combo lends itself well to tenkara fishing, too. Like sandals to boots or ultralight backpacks to Cheryl Strayed, tenkara is a stripped down version of fly fishing from Japan that matches Pa’lante and Bedrock’s spirit of simplicity. The Vibram Megagrip sole on the Pro sandals was designed for traction on wet surfaces and the sidebag can easily serve as an accessible pouch to store a curated fly box.

In all, the collaboration is best appreciated IRL.Thankfully, I've received samples and can attest that the purple (err, mauve) colorway looks especially nice in person, and both pieces function beautifully, too.

As with most collabs worth talking about, the release of the Bedrock x Pa’lante collection is limited—just three select global retailers have the capsule, including Windthrow in Seattle, Outsiders Store in Liverpool and London, and Coffee Outdoors in Wellington, New Zealand. For folks nonlocal to those locales, a limited release is now available online—sandals from Bedrock and the sidebag from Pa’lante.
