The young California brand's new unisex collection blends psychedelic motifs and 1990s graphic aesthetics with technical design
Tech bros have their khakis and vests, hypebeasts their Supreme and sneakers, extra-regular dudes with no discernible style have lower tier New Balance and everything else sold at Costco. And outdoorsists? Well, If REI zip-off cargos aren’t for you, maybe Afield Out can help.
Afield Out, an independent apparel brand from Santa Ana, CA routinely does well to subvert the norms and clichés often associated with outdoor enthusiasts with nature-inspired, design-conscious apparel and gear. The latest SS20 collection continues to back this up.
Though still primarily consisting of T-shirts, hoodies, and outerwear, this season's collection feels a bit more mature than past, with the addition of a smart linen camp shirt and pocket heavy jacket and vest (à la EG). As usual, Earth tones and 1990s design references dominate the collection, with the addition of some psychedelic motifs and a few pops of pastel serving as accents this time around.
On the whole the SS20 collection offers plenty of style with just enough technical hits to satisfy—taped zippers, DWR coatings, etc. And that’s fine by us—after all, more hours than we’d care to admit are spent at a desk than on the trail these days. That said, we’re stoked to see the branded titanium equipment and 55L Joffre Backpack remain in the line as season nonspecific holdovers. And the Palo Santo Sticks. For the culture.
