The camp shoe has traditionally served a simple, specific purpose: be comfortable enough to slip into after a day of hiking, and light enough to carry in a pack. Crocs have become a go-to for a reason. In 2025, Purple Mountain Observatory set out to imagine the camp shoe in its own terms and came up with the Calyx: a seamless waterproof clog made in collaboration with Vibram, redefining the shoe you put on at camp as a more technical, all-weather silhouette.

Now, just over a year later, the Calyx is back for a second run with three new colorways and updated sole treatments, including a gum finish and a dual-speckled variation to the popular silhouette. Available 29 October 2026, the Calyx retains the silhouette and waterproof construction but leans into the discovery that the first release refused to stay at camp.

Designed to Get Dirty

In the Calyx, function and form are inseparable from one another. Its waterproof upper is molded from a single sheet of specialized rubber using Vibram’s StratX tech (which was originally used for orthopedic insoles), completely eliminating the traditional stitching and layered footwear construction. Underfoot, a Vibram Grivola outsole with Megagrip delivers traction across wet or dry ground, on trails or, as PMO discovered since the shoe's original launch, virtually anywhere else.

But the Calyx’s story goes beyond the technical specs. Originally created as a reimagining of a camp shoe, the Calyx has proven itself in environments far beyond the campsite. According to the brand, customer feedback revealed that the shoe ended up in a wider range than originally designed for.

“Having originally designed the Calyx to be an after-hike shoe, it obviously went beyond that,” Purple Mountain Observatory's Joe Barrowclift tells Field Mag. “People wore them because: one, they were comfy, and two, they liked the look of them, so it didn't matter whether they had just finished a hike or not.”

Customers have taken the shoe into offices, paired it with suits, and worn them skiing. Gardeners have also become an unexpected part of its audience.

The shoe's new season campaign leans in, displaying the Calyx's versatility in the world of giant vegetable growing. It might seem alternative at first glance, but the premise of a camp shoe is that it's easy, comfortable, and durable, and the best ones have always been wearable in the garden, at coffee shops, and elsewhere far from tents and Jetboil stoves. Simplicity is what defines a good camp shoe.

“But underneath that simplicity, they have genuine technology doing its job,” Barrowclift says. “You don't need to know all that to appreciate the shoe, though, and I think that's the recipe for why it works.”

Outdoor gear is often designed around a specific activity, but the Calyx proves the best pieces can adapt when conditions—or locations—change. Whether you’re navigating a damp campground or tending a record-setting vegetable garden, the Calyx makes a case for footwear that's built to move between environments.
