The grassroots organization partnered with Hipcamp to invite new adventurers to care for and enjoy their storied alpine huts in Tahoe National Forest

Backcountry huts offer the chance to experience true solitude and unspoiled nature in a way that other modern outdoor lodging simply can't. Those who want a more luxe rustic style of accommodation will want to book a glampsite. But if you’re looking to catch the spirit of backcountry adventure with plenty of mountain soul—and California's Tahoe National Forest is within reach—a stay at the Sierra Club’s historic alpine huts and lodges will do nicely.

And now, booking one is a whole lot easier, too. That's because the Sierra Club, America’s largest grassroots environmental organization, has made six of its backcountry refuges in the Tahoe National Forest available to book through Hipcamp, a popular camping app for tent campers, RVers, and overlanders.

Although the huts have long been open to the public, they weren't exactly publicized and it took some effort to figure out how to book. Plus you had to know they existed in the first place. Thus, have been used infrequently outside core circles. “Those who had been using the huts were primarily Sierra Club volunteers and members,” Lauren Tackbary, marketing director at the Sierra Club tells me. “Partnering with Hipcamp, we are hoping to bring in new folks to experience the magic of the huts and lodges.”

"The backcountry huts are a time capsule of Sierra Nevada history, built by volunteers who paved the way for others to enjoy these wild places."

Since they were constructed in the 1930s, each property has been maintained by Sierra Club members and volunteers, with each one developing its own legacy and storied past. Now, the organization is angling to further their conservation and stewardship by improving access, awareness, and engagement with a wider community of outdoorists.

"Long-term, we are hoping that modernizing the booking process will allow more folks to experience these backcountry huts, and in turn allow them to experience our public lands in a whole new way," said Tackbary. "The backcountry huts are a time capsule of Sierra Nevada history, built by volunteers who paved the way for others to enjoy these wild places."

The newly listed properties include two lodges and four smaller huts available year-round. While some are accessible by car, others require a hike or ski approach that may be more suitable for experienced backcountry adventurers looking to access challenging winter-bound terrain. Among them are the famed Clair Tappan Lodge, a large shelter with communal lodging, full kitchen, and easy access to ski and snowshoe trails, Hutchinson Lodge, a structure hand-built from local stone and timber that's best for large groups and sits near an alpine lake, and four rustic, off-grid huts including Bradley Hut, Benson Hut, Ludlow Hut, and the Peter Grubb Hut.

“So many people simply don’t know these incredible places exist,” said Alyssa Ravasio, founder and CEO of Hipcamp. “We’re excited to help the Sierra Club bring these cabins to a new generation of winter adventurers by making them easier to find, book, and experience firsthand.”
