Even in the year of the sauna (as I've so boldly dubbed 2024 for no reason other than for fun and because it's true) my obsession with wood burning hot tubs continues. The crackle of the fire, scent of the wood, and warmth of the water create a truly harmonious and unique outdoor experience—one only increased by knowing that you (or a loved one) split the wood and built the very fire fueling the experience itself.
Heat therapy (and contrast therapy, wherein you add a cold plunge to your sauna or hot tub circuit) has long been known to have wonderful physical and mental health benefits. And when its experienced in a tub as beautiful as the new soot black offering from British Columbia-based GOODLAND, all the better.
An update to Goodland's existing design (a staple within our wood fired hot tub guide), this striking black wood fired hot tub features charred black siding inspired by the traditional Japanese technique of Yakisugi (commonly misrepresented as Shou Sugi Ban) in which cedar wood is burned to create a fire-hardened, bug- and rot-resistant finish.
The beautiful tub's updated design was also inspired by the slow design and intentional aesthetic of Maine-based architect and builder Anthony Esteves, the “Soot Black” finish further roots the off-grid tub in the natural world.
"The finish is both aesthetically beautiful and truly durable.” says GOODLAND Founder Craig Pearce. “The heat treatment makes the Nordic pine more resistant to the natural elements and the finish doesn't require regular maintenance."
Inside the marine-grade aluminum frame sit western red cedar benches. Functionally, the tub relies on a submerged wood-fired stove that heats the water without risking burned bums.
What I love so much about the GOODLAND design is it’s art-object-ness. It’s fun to look at, even when not in use. The combination of industrial austerity and new age hippie vibes is fun and unexpected. The textured black finish is too. All I can (and do) ask for is a balance between form and function. And this is that.
