It’s easy for a new fly fisher to be intimidated by the sheer volume of gear, techniques, and terminology associated with the sport. On the equipment end, Colorado outdoor lifestyle brand Topo Designs moves to lower that barrier to entry by creating a ready-to-fish kit with Washington fly fishing brand Redington, released today.
The Topo Designs x Redington Fly Fishing Kit ($450) features a special co-branded edition of Redington’s backcountry-friendly Trailblazer rod featuring a grid motif print, reminiscent of one of our favorite pack materials, ripstop.
The fly rod in this kit comes in a 6-piece, 9’ 5-weight size suitable for fishing trout (and other small to midsize species) out of everything from small streams to rivers and lakes. It’s much more common for fly rods to break down into just four pieces, so a six-piece rod offers a considerable degree of mobility for hikers and bikers who want to get a little fishing in.
Once the rod is broken down and stored in the included tube, it lashes onto a special colorway of Topo’s Mountain Hip Pack. The pack itself houses the rest of the accouterments: a reel loaded with line, tippet, hemostats, and a fly box loaded with flies. Once put together, the kit still leaves room for some fishing essentials inside the pack and plenty of opportunities to strap and bungee down other items on the hip pack’s shock cord, d-rings, and lash straps.
Nearly every member of the Field Mag team can count themselves as a bonafide city slicker with a penchant for outdoor adventure. Creating moments of casual, everyday outdoor experiences are part of Topo Design’s ethic it calls “The New Outdoor” is all about. This kit is designed to help veteran and freshman fishers alike create those experiences.
The Topo Designs x Redington Fly Fishing kit is now available in limited numbers from Topo Designs. If the fly fishing bug still hasn’t caught you, don’t worry–we’re sure Topo Designs has more fun stuff in the works for The New Outdoor.
