Embodying our very own interest in good design and the great outdoors is Piaule, a beautiful new landscape hotel and spa in Catskill, New York. Here, among 50-acres of deciduous forest atop a Bluestone ridge overlooking the valley below and mountains beyond, sits 24 modular prefab cabins, a wellness center, restaurant, and lodge. Each embracing quality and comfort firmly rooted in the surrounding landscape.
From the outset, Piaule co-founders Nolan McHugh and Trevor Briggs took major steps to center sustainability both inside and out. Of the 50-acre grounds, only five acres were disturbed to accommodate the entirety of the hotel, with limited tree removal. The team also prepared the land by working with skilled local specialists to eradicate invasive species of undergrowth and re-introduce native ground cover.
To further ground the property, only natural materials that seemingly could have been sourced onsite were used—wood, metal, concrete. In a few years time, Piaule will look like it grew there, right in its place.
