Just a few hours north of New York City, hidden in Catskill forest outside the funky arts-driven town of Woodstock, sits this eponymous poolhouse. Designed by North River Architecture, a local firm that specializes in energy efficient projects, the indoor pool oasis is a dream retreat from the everyday stressors of city life.

Though just 18 feet wide with a footprint of 2,000-square-feet, Woodstock Poolhouse still manages to contain a 60 foot indoor lap pool, spa bathroom, workout room, and covered deck that beckons the outdoors in.

Throughout the summer the low slung structure opens to the elements in every direction. Once leaves and temps begin to drop, triple-pane glass doors keep the poolhouse cozy while still airy and bright. Energy conscious design considerations such as this, plus principles of airtightness and insulation substantially reduce the energy needed to maintain a comfortable temperature in both the building and pool year round. A wood burning stove helps too.

Custom milled Eastern White Pine siding and timber beams—largely harvested from the site itself—emphasis an effort to reduce environmental impact while blending in with the surrounding landscape. In other words, this secret poolhouse is entirely at home in the forest. And it’s no stretch to say, we’d be at home there too.
