"It's not about our bag; it's about your needs." So says Brooklyn-based bag and accessory brand SSCY founder Seldon S.C. Yuan. As an artist and designer with roots in snowboarding, skateboarding, cycling, and surfing, Seldon has done his share of portaging gear. As a result, all of SSCY products lean heavily on functionality by way of innovative design and materials, aiming to adapt to the user’s varying needs.
For their latest release, SSCY introduces the Tack Triangle, a new convertible tote style, and releases classic bag style the Tack Day, both in a new proprietary Japanese Nylon. The unique material is made in a twill weave with matte finish that looks like waxed cotton but features a structure and sound similar to that of a paper bag when handled—the lightly water resistant fabric will soften when wet, and stiffen when dry again. Unlike typical nylon, the fabric’s uncommon rigidity allows the bag to maintain its shape with no additional materials—saving resources and reducing waste—keeping the bag light and durable. And of course all are manufactured by hand in NYC.
The Tack Triangle bag has the silhouette of a classic wide mouth tote with the ability to carry three ways—backpack, crossbody, tote. The over-the-shoulder length handles slide down into backpack straps without any fuss, and there’s even a detachable shoulder strap for crossbody wear.
An exterior flap helps out with items like yoga mats, posters, architectural plans, oversized sandwiches—anything too unruly to fit inside. Clips at the corners of the 25 inch wide opening connect together to immediately reduce the bag's footprint when space is at a premium.
The Tack Day tote backpack comes in a nicely sized daypack shape, sharing similar transformable properties as its cousin the Triangle—it too can be worn as a backpack or carried comfortably as a tote. Open pockets on both sizes are nice for stowing smaller quick-access items, while the main compartment rolls down to close. This scaled down iteration of SSCY's flagship Tack bag is ideal for everday carry.
