How Our Experts Curate, & Review

Expert curation. Our review process starts with selection: Whether we are reviewing hiking pants, 35mm cameras, cabin or sauna kits, our expert reviewers use their hard-earned knowledge and experience to sort through hundreds of options to identify the most trustworthy, high-quality, well-designed outdoor gear and lifestyle products.

Form and function above all else. Featured products must meet the following requirements based on our cumulative experience and Dieter Rams' principles of good design:
- useful
- honest
- aesthetic
- functional
- high-quality
- long-lasting
- environmentally friendly

Recommendations you can trust. Our reviewers are professional athletes, award-winning journalists, certified experts, and obsessive enthusiasts with decades of combined experience in hiking & backpacking, camping, running, cycling, and climbing, among other core outdoor activities—not to mention a skilled knowledge of architecture, glamping, saunas, & cabin building. Our experience for your benefit.

All paid content is carefully created & clearly labeled. From time to time we may partner with respected brands on sponsored articles to promote products we ourselves use and trust. All content is marked as such, as transparency is important to us—we do not accept paid placement in editorial gear guides and product roundups. These occasional collaborations help ensure all our rich content remains free and accessible to all and not hidden behind a pay wall.

Field Mag History aka A Letter From the Editor

"I started Field Mag in 2015 with my co-founder Chris Stillitano in New York City. But to understand our POV, let's go back to the Great Northwest. I grew up with an old growth forest in my backyard and a board under my feet. I spent my youth hiking, climbing, surfing, and riding bikes, and my adolescence chasing an endless winter and the illusive life as a professional snowboarder between New Zealand, British Columbia, and Mount Hood, OR. After the dream faded I finished college then left cabin land for New York City and quickly established myself as a go-to photographer and expert in outdoor gear, design, and men's style. In the budding early 2010s media landscape I contributed to dozens of influential publications and went on tons of hardcore adventures—cycling across Oregon, section hiking the PCT, racing cyclocross. I even rode a motorcycle across America. But it wasn't until I put all those experiences together with my love for design and architecture that Field Mag came to life. With Chris' help of course.

Still operated out of a tiny walk-up apartment, Field Mag has since grown into the most trusted source for modern outdoor lifestyle content online, including design-driven gear news and reviews, culture-driving editorials, travel guides, curated cabin rental lists, and photo essays.

Field Mag makes content for people like us—uncompromising city dwellers obsessed with aesthetics who live for weekend adventures and the next big trip. We hike, camp, climb, cycle, ski and snowboard, with the Northeast as our proving ground. We live in NYC but venture far and wide often—hut trips in Montana, backpacking in Oregon, cycling in Colorado, powder hounding in Japan, surfing in South America, etc. With no shortage of epic cabin stays and glamping retreats in between.

The Field Mag team is made up of nature loving, multi-hyphenates of many backgrounds making content for all the other nature lovers looking to get inspired for their next trip, to learn about best-designed new gear, or simply to find a cabin to escape to. We share stories that pair well with a second cup of coffee. And that first stiff drink.

Thanks for being here with us. We hope you enjoy your stay."
