Portland, Oregon-based Tanner Goods has been making some of the most handsome bags and leather products for well over a decade now. The more recent, adventure adjacent products have been well documented here. We’ll admit, we’re fanboys. But their latest collection, introducing a new proprietary fabric milled in Japan called Konbu, crosses a few intersections near and dear us—modern materials and classic designs, burly but refined, styled equally for the city and the trail.

The Konbu Collection features four classic TG designs, updated with better functionality and improved materials. At the center of it all is Konbu fabric—up to 60% lighter than waxed canvas (Tanner’s traditional fabric of choice), made of military grade Cordura 500D nylon fibers for increased extra strength and durability, and finished with a long lasting, water repellent that keeps weather out without a waxy finish. Aircraft grade hardware and English Bridle leather accents round out the general material upgrades.

Hero of the line is the 34L Koru Rucksack, a more modern leaning silhouette ideal for the daily commuter (or day hiker). The clever design features a full length two-way zipper on the side for quick access to the main compartment and internal laptop sleeve without dealing with the roll-top, and introduces an all-new ergonomic strap system, relying on both four points of adjustment and natural leather for enduring comfort (the natural breakdown of the English Bridle leather will form the straps to the wearer over time, making each use better). The Konbu iteration is 43% lighter than previous versions of this pack. And more weather resistant too.

Another standout is the Voyager Daypack, a 21L top loader backpack with large external zippered pocket, internal laptop sleeve, and drawstring with coverall flap main compartment closure. Designed ith a minimalist design and lightweight, maneuverability in mind, it’s perfect companion for day trips, wherever you need to go.

An aptly named Simple Tote and Dopp Kit both get the Konbu treatment too. Check out the full line from Tanner Goods directly, where the Konbu Collection sells for between $85 and $400.
