Early in 2022, Portland, OR multi-tool maker Leatherman launched an in-house innovation studio called Garage to create limited, single-production releases imbued with the spirit of grit and perseverance of its founder, Tim Leatherman. Preceded by projects like the Mr. Crunch and EUROPE75 multi-tools and the PARTS pocket knife, the Garage's latest release, called Harvest, is the furthest from multi-tool matters yet: it's a fixed-blade knife.
The Harvest uses a premium, hard-wearing S35VN steel with a durable G-10 handle; a material made from epoxy-soaked woven fiberglass that’s compressed and baked for unbelievable durability. It has a drop-point blade and a fairly prominent finger guard, measuring 9.1 inches in total length with a 4.25-inch blade, and weighing in at 163 grams. Despite the knife's impressive material specs, Leatherman decided to keep it real with a tried and true leather sheath for safe carry.
Most folks know Leatherman for multi-tools—the company created the category—that pack everything from micro saw blades to wire cutters. So, what’s the big deal about the Harvest fixed blade? The team of engineers behind Garage cite the fixed-blade knife as one of human history’s foundational multi-purpose tools, capable of so much more than just cutting.
We’re pretty big fans of a certain wilderness survival television program, where contests regularly use their fixed blades to do everything from processing snared game to building primitive shelters, protecting them from extreme elements. Fixed-blade knives are the go-to cutting tool for survival for a reason: the less moving parts there are, the less that can wrong and break. The same makes them great for choring around the house, farm, or cabin, too.
And to be fair, we’re pretty sure we can make it through the next backpacking trip without that extra can opener, screw driver, or impossibly tiny scissors that tend to stay folded in our multi-tools on every outing. It makes the Harvest seem like a simpler alternative for many outdoor needs.
The only complication is that, as with all of the Garage releases, production numbers for the Harvest are extremely limited, which means this one's bound to sell out fast. The Harvest will be available from Leatherman online at 12 pm EST/9 am PST on 19 September 2023.
