In 1983, Tim Leatherman started selling a novel gadget for DIYers: a compact, folding device loaded with helpful tools based around an easy-to-grip pair of pliers. Fast forward four decades, and Leatherman has grown into a giant in the world of multi-tools, with a deep product lineup trusted by DIYers, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone who prizes a handy, well-made tool.
To celebrate 40 years of manufacturing high-quality tools, the Leatherman Garage (the brand’s skunkworks innovation arm known for releasing limited-edition tool and knife designs) will release the Batch #005: 40th Anniversary multi-tool on 5 July 2023.
While it’s upgraded with 21st century materials and functionality, the Leatherman Batch 005: 40th Anniversary tool draws inspiration from the original that put the Portland, OR-based brand on the map.
The 40th Anniversary design comes packed with 20 tools, but it weighs just 8.65 ounces and measures a tidy 4.25 inches when fully closed up. Like all Leatherman multi-tools, it has a wide range of implements to cover a variety of jobs, including adjustable spring-action pliers, an electrical crimper, a saw, a pair of scissors, a pry tool, a screwdriver, and more. (Don't worry, there’s a bottle opener as well.)
While the basic idea behind Leatherman multi-tools hasn’t changed much in four decades, the underlying tech has advanced considerably. The 40th Anniversary features the latest and greatest developments. All of its tools are built with FREE technology, a magnetic mechanism that allows the user to open each tool with one hand (always helpful when tackling complicated jobs that require holding something in place) and its handles have a Cerakote ceramic finish. In addition, the 40th Anniversary’s 2.78-inch straight blade knife is crafted from MagnaCut steel, a new premium type of stainless steel that boasts exceptional durability, edge retention, and corrosion resistance. According to Leatherman, this model marks the first time MagnaCut has been used in a multi-tool.
It’s a compelling option for tool nerds or anyone who needs a hardworking multi-tool, but don’t wait around to get one. Leatherman Garage releases tend to sell out in seconds, and the brand is releasing just 1,983 (1983, get it?) units of the 40th Anniversary.
