In January 2025, surfers Sarah Kowallik and Lillian Garlick huddled in the cockpit of a sailboat floating in Raja Ampat, a remote diving destination in the northwest Indonesian archipelago. Rain lashed the deck—the heaviest downpour of the journey so far—and blurred Garlick’s first sketches of a wardrobe essential that the two of them had begun dreaming up together.
Rather than packing different outfits for each activity, they longed for one technical garment that they could wear surfing, sailing, hiking, climbing, to yoga, in town, and beyond. “It seems so silly to need something so specific for every single activity,” Kowallik told Field Mag.
Garlick added, “The root of it was not just replacing physical products but also the mental space so that you know that if you grab that piece in the morning you can do anything that day. That what you’re wearing is not dictating your freedom of movement or your freedom of lifestyle.”
After dozens more sketches, extensive field research, and months of prototyping, Garlick, an apparel designer, and Kowallik, a digital product and brand designer, created the Horizon Bodysuit. Today, 7 August 2025, it launches on Kickstarter as the first product under the newly formed brand Before Dawn Supply Co.
