New York menswear designer Todd Snyder has cooked up another collection with the one and only L.L. Bean. Borrowing a lot of Maine style and a little Mainer slang, the Upta Camp collection does the 100-year-old outfitter right with dozens of refreshed styles well fit for getting away from the daily grind and among nature’s glory.
As a designer with an eye for classics over fleeting trends, Snyder has pulled items from the archives of L.L. Bean and given only slight updates in order to leave his mark. Jackets, tops, bottoms, and of course a pair of Bean boots make up the well rounded collection that would style well with mainline pieces from either brand. Expect to see slim fitting cuts closer to Todd Snyder’s realm rather than L.L. Bean’s more classic full cuts—here's to hoping the next collab from these two brings some of the baggy that we’ve welcomed into our style in recent years.
L.L. Bean’s classic Baxter State Parka ($299) is the brand’s 60/40 jacket that vintage heads love to snatch up from thrift stores and flea markets. For his rendition, Todd picked out some classic flannels for the jacket’s lining and slimmed down the cut. For big time Bean fans, an olive colorway comes decked out with patches that celebrate the brand loudly.
Anglers will want to take note of the Maine-camo-lined Fishing Jacket ($249) with details like inner game pockets and a rod keeper strap, retained for both authenticity and functionality. Fairer Fall and Winter weather makes the Hi-Pile Sherpa Snap-Front Shirt Jacket ($189) a cozy option too.
Pile on the layers with a streamlined rendition of the Chamois Shirt ($129) that’s available in nine colorways and patterns to choose from, some of which feature contrasting nylon panels for hard wear and style. We hope to show up to some seasonal festivities rocking the Turtleneck Duck Scenic Sweatshirt ($199) with a hot cider in hand.
The Climbing Pant ($149) strikes us as a surprise inclusion, but hey we love integrated webbing belts and pockets, (in addition to climbing pants in general) so why not? If you’ve got the preppy swag to pull it off, the dry flies on the Embroidered Pants ($199) are a nice upgrade from the usual smiling whale.
If there’s a single product that Bean is known best for, it’s the Maine Hunting Shoe. Or, for non-hunters, Bean Boots. Todd Snyder based their styling of the Waxed Canvas Bean Boots ($279) on a 1927 variation called the Cruiser Boot where leather uppers were swapped out for a waxed cotton. The green boot colorway that we favor is finished with a deep coral-hued chain tread sole that pops nicely against seasonal drabs. Celebrate your enthusiasm for the iconic boot by rocking them with the 100% merino wool Heritage Crewneck Sweater ($199) with a bean boot woven front and center. A nice vibe for the 'Lo Heads among us.
Haul around town with a tri-color Boat and Tote ($249) under your arm, which like the earlier Baxter State Parka, is well-covered in a collection of Maine-themed patches. If you want to complete the retro-hiker look, throw a Continental Rucksack ($189) on your back.
If this collection is anything like the 2020 edition, pieces will be selling faster than a lobster roll on Memorial Day Weekend at Red’s.
